11 February 2015 - 14 March 2015
February 12, 2015 at 18.00 Museum of Soviet naive in conjunction with the St. Petersburg gallery Luda opens the exhibition "Probability", which will showcase the works of four artists originally from Perm, who left their hometown in youth: Ilya Grishaev, Sergey Denisov, Dmitry Zhukov and Asya Marakulina. In St. – Petersburg the exhibition will be open March 27, 2015.
Representatives of two different generations return home in search of unifying motif. Going on a nostalgic journey to the origins, artists can take a fresh look at the familiar to pain situation.
Sergey Denisov and Dmitry Zhukov, both of 1960s, familiar from childhood and went from Perm to St. Petersburg almost simultaneously. Sergey Denisov – collector – researcher. His works – collecting of wings, cocoons, feathers, particles of mica … He creates mystical – magical spaces, experiments, poeticises reality. The images in his works reminiscent illustrations from a biology textbook, more often – allowance on entomology. The key technique – collage; installations of Sergey Denisov – these are collages in three dimensions; they are created grace for the connection of different materials, images, characters. All of this makes magic microenvironments, attracts and fascinates.
Dmitry Zhukov is close to Denisov in character, in mood. But he is not engaged in the construction of space of the poetic experiment, he gravitates to mapping of dreams, illusions, fantasies, accompanying them by detached texts. Ornithological myth, created by him for the exhibition "Probability" – is reflection of return to "home nest," pop-up in a mess of the memories, revolt of awakened memory.
Ilya Grishaev and Asya Marakulina belong to younger generation, but share thoughtful and charismatic of Zhukov and Denisov. Asya painstakingly creates a map of some abstract space. Unconscious emotional cartography, miniature luminous dotted lines – an endless route in time.
Ilya Grishaev somewhat different from the other members of the quartet. Rigor, minimalism, but still the same desire to experiment. Permanent work on the form, the pursuit of its absolute purification, laconicism and versatility. Proximity to calligraphy and at the same time to automatic writing gives rise the images, which have the ability to contain in itself any value – or lack thereof. For the most part, the exhibition "Probability" – is a study of the role of chance and probability in art. Common roots, the place – all the things that each of the artists seemed to be left at home, finds a new role in the overall body of the exhibition, as well as in all their creativity. Is building intergenerational communication.
The generality of the place of birth – what is this: coincidence or a sign of some kind of predestination? Does influence environment for creativity? Could this influence to combine four different artistic strategies? Such questions ask themselves the exhibition curators Peter Beliy and Elizabeth Matveeva.
Geographical indication has become merely a pretext for union of works on one platform. Their intimacy – is not formal, but essential. Return to Perm of the Permian artists – is a curatorial gesture that takes topographical and anthropological character. Voluntary artistic repatriation, albeit temporary, allows to look at collection of works as on something whole.
The exhibition runs until 14 March 2015.
