April 2, at 18.30 in the Perm art gallery is opened the exhibition "The FACE. Evolution of portrait in the photography".
The exhibition will be opened for visitors from 02.04.2015 till 24.05.2015 year.
For millennia, the human face had been inspired by artists. Everything that happens with people, maybe it is a joy and sorrow, love and hate, shows on their faces. We can make a judgment about a person, look at him in the face. On the other hand, appearances are deceiving – the face can be a mask, a disguise. Between the poles of sincerity and pretense, psychological depth and the conventions of theatre is the history of the genre of the portrait in art and in photography, as an integral part of it.
For photographers that inherits the classical tradition, in the person interesting, especially the character, personality – everything that distinguishes him as a person. The portrait in this case becomes a space of dialogue where the viewer's eye inevitably meets. People in portraits can be bribed sincerity, to elicit sympathy, or to produce a feeling of revulsion, but in any case, we perceive the personal "I" character, the difference from others. The opposite approach of authors, tending to the postmodern tradition. The look and character disappear from the portrait, the image becomes an expression of the drama of leveling, misplacement of the individual in the kaleidoscope of masks-label consumer society. The mask hides the face, the sincerity inferior to the theatrical, social role changes personal destiny. From the photos we are going to learn about time, country, era, and almost nothing about the people who became the characters in the portrait.
The exposition is presented the works by 30 authors from around the world. The pictures of various ways of shooting and the technique of printing: direct photo has taken on the street on film, to digital collage. But whatever the style did not work as a photographer, no matter what techniques he used, a glimpse of the portrait genre is always the search for the answer to the question: "What is the man?".
